Helicopter Air Ambulance Rates & Insurance Coverage

Air ambulance flights can be very expensive, and your insurance or employee benefit plan may not cover as much as you expect.

The table below will help you to understand:

  • The charges that go into an air ambulance bill,
  • What your insurer or plan will pay,
  • Whether your air ambulance provider is in your insurer’s or plan’s network,
  • Whether your air ambulance provider is in your insurer’s or plan’s network, and
  • Whether you’ll be billed after your insurer or plan pays its portion.

Different rates apply for helicopter versus airplane flights. A typical air ambulance bill includes a lift-off charge (a flat rate applied to every flight), and a per-mile charge. Most per-mile charges apply only while the patient is actually on-board.

Keep in mind, this table doesn’t take into account deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance you may owe toward an air ambulance bill. These factors are an additional expense beyond the “Patient Responsibility” listed below. These figures are estimates, and will not provide a precise calculation of the amount you may owe. The data provided is the most current information available to the CSI as of the listed effective date. Additionally, other cost considerations may impact your ultimate air ambulance bill. It is always recommended that you contact your air ambulance provider and insurer or plan with any questions about your bill or insurance coverage.
