How many Montanans go without health insurance and why?
They seem like simple questions, but before 2013, no one had the answers. In an effort to better understand the effects of health care reform in Montana, our uninsured population and the economic consequences of expanding the Montana Medicaid program, Commissioner Lindeen in 2012 asked a group of experts to study the uninsured in Montana. The result was a presentation called “Lay of the Land” offered to lawmakers of the 2013 Montana Legislature.
Commissioner Lindeen continues to study Montana’s uninsured population in an effort to quantify how many previously uncovered Montanans have gained coverage. Each year, after the national health insurance open enrollment period, her office queries Montana’s health insurance companies in an effort to better quantify how many Montanans have coverage.
