HELENA, Mont. – Commissioner of Securities and Insurance Monica J. Lindeen today announced the appointment of Adam J. Schafer as her deputy commissioner and chief of staff.

“In 2012, my office will be focused on strengthening consumer protections through effective, efficient regulation of the insurance and securities industries,” said Lindeen. “Adam has a wealth of experience in the legislative process that will help my office prepare for our next legislative session and pass laws that improve consumer protection while ensuring our local insurance and securities firms across the state can grow and create jobs. Adam will be a great asset for this office and I’m excited to have him join our team.”

Raised in Billings, Mont., Schafer served as executive director for the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators in Washington, D.C., before moving back to Montana to become Lindeen’s deputy. Schafer brings extensive experience with the Montana legislature, having served as chief of staff and secretary for Democratic leaders in the state Senate during the 2001 and 1999 legislatures, respectively.

Schafer graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1992 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, in political science and sociology with an emphasis on criminal justice.

Schafer replaces B.J. Hoven, who served as interim deputy commissioner since June. Hoven will remain with the Commissioner’s office as Lindeen’s executive assistant.
