A well-regulated insurance industry in Montana serves both individual Montanans and the insurance companies who do business in our state.

To date, 1,500 insurance companies and 24,000 insurance agents have applied for and have been granted licenses to conduct the business of insurance in Montana. We routinely examine the financial information of all insurance companies doing business in Montana to ensure they are on solid financial footing. We review and approve most every type of insurance policy sold in Montana to ensure it complies with Montana law. Montana law requires most insurance rates to be filed with our office before the plan can be sold. And we routinely review how Montana insurance companies treat their customers.

Insurance is Montana’s third-largest industry and we are one of the smallest agencies in state government, so we’ve got a big job!

Much of that work is interacting with insurance companies and agents. Montana’s insurance professionals will find many of the resources they need on these pages.
