
OBTAINING A NONRESIDENT INSURANCE LICENSE
STEP 1: HOLD A RESIDENT LICENSE IN YOUR HOME STATE
- Obtain an active resident insurance license in your state of residence or principal place of business
- Ensure your resident license is in good standing
STEP 2: REVIEW LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Visit the NIPR website to review Montana’s specific requirements
- Fees
- Lines of Authority
- Rules and Requirements
- Submit your application electronically through NIPR
- Pay the nonresident application fee of $100.00
- Paper applications are generally not accepted
- If you cannot apply through NIPR, contact Montana producer licensing at producerlicensing@mt.gov for instructions
- Fingerprinting is typically not required for nonresident applicants who were previously fingerprinted for their resident license
- If you answer “yes” to any background questions, submit supporting documents electronically via NIPR’s Attachments Warehouse
- You may add lines of authority to an existing active license through NIPR
- Licenses must be renewed biennially, with a renewal period starting 90 days before expiration
- Late renewals are possible up to one year after expiration, but inactive licenses cannot be renewed and require reapplication
