CSI INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

 

The CSI, through its internship program, recognizes the importance for state government to identify, recruit, and retain the next generation of public servants. We value the contributions made by students and recent graduates
of all ages and backgrounds.

The internship program provides students an immersive opportunity to combine classroom learning with part-time or full-time work experience. Our program allows students in colleges, trade schools, and other qualifying educational institutions a paid opportunity to work in the agency and explore careers while completing their education. Students will gain relevant experience in their area of interest, which may include receiving academic credit toward graduation. For academic credit, internships generally align with an educational institution’s term schedule (fall, spring, and summer).

When I started my internship at CSI, I had no idea what the State Auditor’s Office did, but I was invited to apply by an MSU professor during my junior year. By the end, I truly enjoyed the work of the agency and the staff. After I graduated, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to join the agency full time. I was excited to be able to stay and work in Montana—with great employer benefits! Above all, it’s really the people here who make this agency such a wonderful place to work. One year later, I still enjoy coming to work every day.

FAQ

Who is eligible to apply for an internship?

  • Must be enrolled in a college, university, or technical school, or be within 6 months of graduation date
  • Have completed at least 60 academic credits or 30 credits if enrolled in technical school and be in good academic standing

What is a typical work schedule?
Year-round or 3-6 months starting in Fall, Spring, or Summer. Hours per week can range from 15-40, Monday–Friday.

Where are internships available?
All of our internships are based in Helena, Montana at our agency office, 840 Helena Avenue.

Are internships paid or unpaid? 
Positions are generally paid, with salary included in the job posting (typically $17/hour).  However, there may be circumstances where an approved internship is for experience only and unpaid.

Can a CSI intern receive academic credit?
Academic credit for internships is governed by the institution. Our agency will work with the institution to determine documentation requirements for the student to receive credit.

Are interns eligible for permanent positions?
Interns are encouraged to review agency job postings and apply. Agency job postings include applicable education and experience qualifications. During an internship, students gain real, hands-on job experiences to enhance resume knowledge, skills, and abilities.
