MULTI-LEVEL MARKETING COMPANIES
Multi-level marketing companies (MLMs) are required to register with the CSI Securities
Division. All submissions are submitted electronically, please do not mail in.
- An MLM is one that sells, distributes, or supplies goods or services through agents, contractors, or distributors at different levels of distribution.
- MLMs also include companies that compensate participants, in part, based on purchases, sales, or the recruitment of other participants in the MLM.
- Companies that are a member of the Direct Selling Association (DSA) are not required to file notice with the CSI.
- Compliance with Montana state law does not signify that the state endorses a multi-level marketing company, and just because a company is registered with the CSI does not mean the company’s products and selling plan are foolproof. A person should do their own due diligence before joining.
IMPORTANT: All filings are now electronic. Do not mail in any submissions. Please download the MLD-1 Form to your desktop, fill it out, and click the button at the end of the form to submit it with any supporting documents.
MLM NOTICE FILING & COMPLIANCE
In Montana, it is unlawful for a person to transact business in this state as a multi-level marketing company unless the MLM has filed with the Montana CSI or is a member of the Direct Selling Association (DSA).
